Is door hanger advertising a cost effective way to advertise a startup?

I'm a big fan of door hangers, but for a PC repair business I would not recommend using them to advertise. You can hang an advertisement on every person's door in your neighborhood, but how many of those people are having PC troubles? Maybe none. You don't know for sure.

Door hangers are more for things like pizza or something. How many people in your neighborhood are going to eat something for dinner tonight…probably every single person. And if they have a flier in their hand that gives them a delicious option for dinner then that is one effective advertisement.

So you want to find a place to advertise where the majority of people who see your message are looking to get their PC fixed. The yellow pages are the first thing that comes to mind. If I need my computer fixed, I don't know a good place around me so I'm going to go the the yellow pages. If your name is there then there is a good chance I am going to at least give you a call for a quote. Then it's up to you to build your potential customer's confidence in your ability to solve their problems. Online yellow pages are very popular these days. Although if somebody is having trouble with their PC will they be able to get online…I don't know?
